We provide homework help, computer/internet access, snacks, and much more. Healthy eating and activity is taught & practised.
The Options Program
Unfortunately, sometimes students undergo out-of-school suspension, of which they may spend this time at home by themselves engaged in an unhealthy activity and not completing assignments. In place of this, HHC invites parents to enrol their children in our program during this time. We work with parents and school officials to ensure children meet expectations, and also provide accredited consoling to help them overcome improper behavior and other obstacles.
Young Author's Project
- HHC will serve 30 participants in cohorts of 10. They will be broken down into three groups as follows:
- Group 1: 8-10 years;
- Group 2: 11-12 years;
- Group 3: 13-14 years
The program will operate Wednesday through Friday from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm and on Saturdays from 12 pm to 4 pm; and will be implemented in 3 Cycles. Each Cycle will run for seven weeks and will conclude with a presentation ceremony and readings by student authors for each cohort selected by their peers.
All students will be given a metal to denote their success. Families will be invited to attend. The first cycle will start in January 2020 and the program, for the first fiscal year, will end in June 2020 with a Young Author's Book Signing and participant readings of their work. The daily weekly schedule will include snack and homework help for the first thirty minutes of the day.
Students will then move into their various group assignments for the day. All students will get one hour of engagement a week in Khan Academy in both Reading and Math skills development. Financial Literacy will be facilitated by TD Bank and will support our efforts to instill in our students' money management skills. They will also get one hour of language arts; career exploration and introductions in "Careers & Me."
In this group, students will research careers and trades online and journal about the ones of interest to them. This will ignite participants' knowledge of trades and careers. This section will be culminated by a Spring Careers & Trades one-day fair. Lastly, participants will prepare for the Saturday Author's Writing Workshop, by attending a one hour a week copy editing and polishing group. In this group, the educational team will assist students in making the correction to their written pieces, such as grammar, sentence structure, and the like.
This will aid students in improving their writing skills. The Saturday group will involve the actual writing of their book. Students will learn about the writing, illustration, and online publishing of their books. This will also include weekly special representations or instructional work like coding, that will be introduced to students so they can design the graphics for their books.
